If you have ever lived abroad (or plan to), you inevitably either needed to or will need to give other people your phone number. Depending on who you give your number to and how you give it to them, they may never reach you because you have not provided it in a way that works based on the country they are dialling it from.
Never fear! The formats listed below will work from any country and will help you stay connected. It is good to get in the habit of supplying the number this way all the time.
Country Codes
Start with the “+” symbol and then the country code, for example:
+49 would be for Germany
+1 would be for the USA

The Area Code
Next you will want to add the area code. In Germany, this is called the “Vorwahl”. Normally you see it listed with a “(0)” then “63” for example, but when using the international code, eliminate the “(0)”. So it would look like this:
+4963 for Germany for a land line
+49162 for Germany for a mobile line
+1212 for the USA
The Local Phone Number
Finally, you would add the local phone number. Depending on the number, it does not always have the same number of digits for Germany. The USA is always 7 digits.
+4963123456 (Germany land line example)
+49162345678 (Germany mobile line example)
+12125551212 (USA number example)
Presenting your number this way is the best way to ensure you will get calls from anywhere.
